Potential Heavy rain and Thunderstorms for Cumbria Sunday 4th July 2021

Alert message sent 04/07/2021 12:00:00

Information sent on behalf of The Environment Agency

Potential Heavy rain and Thunderstorms for Cumbria Sunday 4th July 2021.

Yesterday we witnessed some isolated heavy thundery downpours over Cumbria and some more widespread heavy thundery showers are forecast today. These may organise or align into bands later this afternoon and evening giving some large accumulations in a few places with the potential for localised surface water flooding impacts. There is also a low risk of isolated flooding from small urbanised and upland rapid responding watercourses should localised torrential downpours occur.  Isolated showers are expected again on Monday. Showers likely to continue until Thursday, with possible flooding impacts most likely on Tuesday and Wednesday before rain eases up by Thursday.

A Met Office Yellow warning is now in force which covers Cumbria till midnight tonight for Heavy rain and potential thunderstorms.  Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out during today, perhaps becoming quite widespread during the later afternoon and possibly persisting into late evening. Some places will miss the worst of these, but where they do occur, 20 to 30 mm rain could fall in a short space of time leading to some surface water flooding. Lightning and hail may be additional hazards. There is low confidence in the timing, location and distribution of these showers and thunderstorms as is the case with this type of weather pattern and many places may see little or only small rainfall totals.
We have been monitoring the situation closely and our field teams have been proactively checking grids and debris screens throughout this weekend. There are currently no Flood Alerts or Flood Warnings in place for Cumbria but some operational response or alerts/warnings may be required at short notice.
