Heavy rain and potential flooding for Cumbria

Alert message sent 19/01/2021 13:31:00

Information sent on behalf of The Environment Agency

The weather outlook for the next couple of days is for persistent and possibly heavy rain, particularly over higher ground. This rainfall will possibly result in some flooding impacts across Cumbria.
Following a wet few weeks, rivers are expected to react to this rainfall and rise close to or exceed our Flood Alert levels.  We will therefore have Flood Alerts in place for all river catchments across Cumbria from later today.  This means flooding is possible to low lying land and roads.  We do not expect significant impacts from this rain but we will monitor closely over the next couple of days and issue Flood Warnings should we anticipate any potential flooding to property.
Environment Agency staff are undertaking inspections of our flood defence structures and will remove any blockages on debris screens.
Be flood ready. It is important that you are prepared for flooding and we encourage you to take 3 simple steps:-

1.  Sign up to Flood Warning Service to receive free flood warnings

2.  Know what to do when a flood warning is issued.  We encourage you have a personal flood plan for you and your family

3.  Keep an eye on the situation.  You can view a 5 day weather forecast and monitor river levels online at and

Further information is available on our website or by ringing Floodline on 0345 988 1188.  Advice and information on other sources of flooding can be found at
